Guide

Regrouping, step by step

None keeps every column below ten, so 34 + 25 can be done digit by digit. Some makes sure every sum carries at least once, as in 38 + 25. Every carries in each column below the highest one: on three-digit sheets that means both the ones and the tens, as in 168 + 274. Mixed leaves it to chance.

A common path is None, then Some, then Every, moving on when a child can do a sheet accurately without rushing.

Horizontal or stacked

Horizontal sums (25 + 38 = ___) suit mental strategies. Stacked sums suit the written column method, because tens sit above tens. Tick Stacked (column) layout to switch.

Frequently asked questions

What does regrouping mean?

Regrouping (also called carrying) is when a column adds up to ten or more and ten ones become one ten in the next column. The None, Some and Every options control how often that happens.

Can I print addition facts within 10 or 20?

Easy uses numbers up to 20. For number bonds, choose Easy with Carrying set to None, which keeps each sum within ten.

Is there an answer key?

Yes, on its own page after the worksheet. You can hide it before printing.
