Guide

Borrowing settings

None keeps every top digit at least as big as the one under it (86 − 43). Some needs at least one borrow (82 − 47). Every borrows in each column below the highest: on three-digit sheets the ones and the tens both need it (523 − 168). These are the harder sums, so save them for when the method is secure.

Borrowing is also called regrouping or decomposition, depending on where you learned it; the setting means the same thing.

Checking with addition

Ask children to check an answer by adding it back: 523 − 168 = 355 because 355 + 168 = 523. Our addition pages use the same regrouping settings, so you can print a matching addition sheet.

Printable sample PDFs

Try a fixed worksheet with its matching answer page. These samples use sheet 73; for other topics, settings or sheet numbers, use Print / Save PDF in the generator.

Frequently asked questions

Can a subtraction answer be negative?

No. The first number is always at least as big as the second, at every level.

What is borrowing in subtraction?

When a top digit is smaller than the digit below it, one ten (or hundred) is exchanged for ten ones (or tens) so the column can be subtracted. It is also called regrouping.

Can I get the same worksheet again?

Yes. The same settings and sheet number always give the same questions and key.
